New Center of Rehabilitation for Marine Animals in el prat del llobregat

Who we are / Center of Rehabilitation for Marine Animals in Premià de Mar / New Center of Rehabilitation for Marine Animals in el Prat del Llobregat

After 14 years of clinical and rehabilitation in Premià de mar, CRAM project has grown and requires new facilities to continue the efforts in favour of the marine environment.

In early 2010, El Prat del Llobregat will see the birth of the new CRAM: a center with leading equipment that will consolidate as a global reference point in clinical and rehabilitation of endangered marine species.

Located in the old golf of El Prat del Llobregat, the new CRAM will have a 18,000 m2 campus including a rehabilitation clinic, an administration staffing and education building; a postmortem studies area and several swimming pools and tanks for the treatment of specimens that arrive to the center and for its reintroduction into the sea in the shortest time possible.

The few precedents for this type of facility will convert the new CRAM into a pioneer in design of management and conservation techniques of marine animals. Thus, in order to faithfully reproduce the life conditions on the outside of the species reached the clinic, the spaces will be accurate to the aquatic habitat characteristics of the Mediterranean. ¿The goal? Achieve the effect of a ‘sea field'. For this reason, the water supply circuit will come directly from the sea and a current generator will simulate the movement of waves.

Turtles, dolphins and birds will be some of the species that will have a clinical care area in the clinic building with facilities as operating rooms, X-ray, ultrasound and other medical devices that enable the realization of accurate diagnosis. The postmortem studies area will allow scientists to perform autopsies when needed to clarify the reasons for the death of some animals. This will generate a specific knowledge that will be very useful in research activities in conjunction with other veterinary and biological entities.

In addition, the site will be located in an area of great natural beauty, the Delta del Llobregat, which will position CRAM within the guided tours of the area and expand its dissemination activities. The proximity to the future subway station of line 9 will bring closer the metropolitan area of Barcelona. More than 4 million people who will be able to enjoy CRAM visitor’s circuit. The design of the pool with glass walls, opaque and visible from the inside out, will allow observing the evolution of animal species keeping them undisturbed, continuing education work without interaction with the animals that had characterized the activities of CRAM.

The new center in El Prat del Llobregat is funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ministry of Environment, the Municipality of El Prat del Llobregat and Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) and has an approximate cost of EUR 5 million.
