CONSERVATION ACTIONS

What we do / Conservation actions

The CRAM Foundation is involved in a series of projects which aim for the recovery of marine ecosystems and their endangered species. In collaboration with other scientific research groups, we work to develop and encourage research and exploration projects that are designed to diminish the decline of population species and recover their habitat and protected marine ecosystems.

Our lines of action revolve around the following main points: habitat and species, exploration campaigns, fisheries interactions and climate change.

Habitats and species

Projects:

Status of oceanic Posidonia meadows in the Catalan coast (2006-2007).
Pilot project: Introduction of study patterns of maërl subtidal beds.
Description of breeding habitats of the monk seal in the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Seabirds of the Atlantic islands: Salvajes, Madeira and Desiertas.
Distribution study of seabirds and cetaceans in the area of "The Cachucho".
Exploration of the Gulf of Cadiz by submarine robot and acoustic transects.
Study of Cinderella shearwater populations on the north coast of Menorca.
Study of sperm whale populations (Physeter macrocephalus) in the Balearic Islands.
Shark Alliance.

Exploration Campaigns

The CRAM Foundation works as a platform for the exploration of the marine environment by making its resources available to a wide variety of projects, both for the Foundation and other research groups.

Projects:

Study of the distribution of seabirds and cetaceans in the area of "The Cachucho”.
Exploration of the Gulf of Cadiz by submarine robot and acoustic transects.
Exploration of the depth limit distribution of invasive algae Caulerpa racemosa.
Study of belugas in Alaska.
Bioacoustics study on cetaceans.
New techniques in noise pollution assessment on cetacean populations.
Study of sperm whale population (Physeter macrocephalus) in the Balearic Islands.
Dispersal of invasive species through plastic and floating objects.

Fisheries Interaction

The CRAM Foundation believes it is essential to work together with the fishing industry in order to achieve two objectives: minimizing the impact of fisheries on the marine environment and achieving a more sustainable trade.

Projects:

Elasmobranchs: Conservation and management of their fisheries by Obra Social Caja Madrid.
Article on shark fishing in Spain.
Project G.
Study of the impact of fishery driftnets on endangered species.
Longline Baleares.
"Ajudem-la" (help them).

Climate change

The CRAM Foundation has designed a line of work to convey the overall concept of 'climate change', to define its impact on the marine environment and to pin point all social implications arising.

Projects:

"la Caixa" a Favor del Mar - La Ruta del Vell Marí 2009.
Status of gorgonia and corals at the marine reserve of the Columbretes islands.
Study of Cinderella shearwater populations on the north coast of Menorca.
Exploration of depth limit distribution of invasive algae Caulerpa racemosa.
