World Ocean Day. Together for a healthy ocean
On June 8, the CRAM Foundation celebrates the World Ocean Day, because we know that together we can achieve the conservation of species and ecosystems.
Green Submerged Zones (Vilanova i la Geltrú)
The Green Submerged Zones project, conducted by “la Caixa a favour del mar” during 2006, was an initiative of the Network for the Study of the quality of Posidonia meadows in Catalonia. The project objective was to inform citizens of the municipalities of each municipality coastal submerged biological heritage.

La Thonaille
Information and evaluation campaign on the interaction caused by illegal fishing gear such as thonaille gillnets conducted by the CRAM Foundation in 2006. The "thonaille" was banned in the European Union in 2002, but some countries still practice. Now, France has been condemned by the European Court to allow its fishermen to fish with this type of illegal nets.
Saloum Delta
In 2009, CRAM Foundation developed an international cooperation project in the Saloum Delta (Senegal). The goal is to implement and disseminate the concept of sustainable development in the territory through marine conservation actions.
Le Ronier (Saloum Delta)
[in french]
Le Ronier (Borassus aethiopium) is a palm tree that plays a key role in the African Sahel. Its leaves are used in construction and crafts and its fruit in the traditional pharmacopoeia. Therefore, the NGO Waame (West African Organization for the Marine Environment) is carrying out a project for the sustainable management and utilization of this species where the communities work in the craft of Ronier and sell their products to enhance the local economy.
La mangrove (Saloum Delta)
[in french]
The mangrove forest is found in tropical coastal areas and estuaries, characterized by its high biodiversity. Therefore occupies a key role in the socio-economic system and cultural life of the people who inhabit it. Fishing, shellfish collection, exploitation of salt and wood, beekeeping and tourism are some of the activities being carried out. However it is a fragile ecosystem and the poor forestry and agriculture techniques, in addition to some environmental factors, have led to its decline. In Senegal, between 1980 and 2006, the mangrove area has declined from 1690 to 1287 square kilometers. Thus, the Senegalese NGO WAAME (West African Association for Marine Environment) is conducting a mangrove reforestation campaign based in traditional and modern techniques with the help of the communities that inhabit these regions.
Protecting the marine turtles
The Vell Mari Route (2006-2007): sea turtles are reptiles that inhabit the planet for over 150 million years. Unfortunately, at present the different species are threatened or endangered throughout its distribution range.
Protecting the seagrass meadows
The Vell Mari Route (2006-2007): the seagrass are plants adapted to live in the marine environment, they form large submerged areas with the appearance of a forest and have a great biological and ecological importance. Its community is an important producer of oxygen and organic matter. They give protection to many species of animals that use it for reproducing and as a shelter. The form structures which stabilize the dynamics of sand banks, being a good protector for the maintenance of beaches and coves of our coast. They are still not too well known and are often mistaken for algae, the general public unaware of its significance in marine ecosystems and even though there are laws that protect them, they are on regression.
The Vell Marí route (2006-2007)
Aiming to raise awareness and disseminate knowledge about our oceans, the CRAM Foundation and the Obra Social Caixa organized the campaign: “la Caixa” in favor of the sea: the Vell Marí route, being the first sailboat that travels all the Spanish coast (including both Atlantic and mediterranean waters,) conducting educational and scientific work. With this environmental program, the scientific sailboat Vell Mari dock at 25 ports along the coasts, completing the whole peninsular coastline and the Balearic and Canary Islands. Moreover, the educational work of the Foundation CRAM was not restricted to coastal cities, and it was extended to other cities in the peninsula through the mobile classroom.
A school visits the Vell Marí
[in catalan]
The Vell Mari has become a platform to raise awareness of global problems of marine conservation and to make the people aware of environmental issues that specifically affect the Spanish coast. In 2007, nearly 12,000 people visited the Vell Marí and participated in the educational activities carried out in the boat and its mobile classroom. In 2009, the sailboat of the CRAM Foundation will sail during 6000 nautical miles and make 30,000 visitors aware of the environmental problems. It will land in 25 ports on the Spanish coast. The video is a school visit from Palma de Mallorca.
Climate change: the environmental challenge of the XXI century
The climate change is one of the environmental challenges of the twenty-first century. One of the main cause is the increase of the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, the gas emitted by combustion of fuel, and other gases. Therefore CRAM Foundation is involved in both their study and in the disclosure of its effects and possible solutions.

Columbretes 2008
The program “la Caixa” a favor del mar: The Vell Marí`s route, developed jointly by the Obra Social "la Caixa" and the CRAM Foundation, took the scientific ship Vell Marí to the Columbretes Islands, off the coast of Castellon. There, the scientists studied the Marine Reserve of Columbretes to know how global warming Water is affecting the mediterranean coral Cladocora caespitose.
Menorca 2008
The shearwater (Calonectric diomedea) colony on the north coast of Menorca was considered the most important breeding colony of Spain, but since 1991 had not been surveyed. To make this data to help update the census, and within the program "la Caixa" in favor of the sea: The Vell Marí's route”, the scientific team of the CRAM Foundation, next to a biologist specializing in birds Miguel McMinn, went last July to this enclave to know the current status of the colony.
Formentera 2008
